Audi/Honda Solar Power Carports

Hailstorms cause millions of dollars of damage to vehicles and homes annually in Calgary. Car dealerships are particularly susceptible with large amounts of their valuable assets parked in outdoor lots. Like any business, these dealerships also consume electricity for many hours every day. Sol Power up with a solution to protect vehicles from hail while providing renewable power for the dealership and Rangeland provided the design engineering and construction management. In order to be feasible projects, these structures need to be designed for maximum economic efficiency.

The facility design included: •300-400 kilowatt systems, ~1,000 solar modules at 300-350 watts each •Module efficiency of 18% •Producing approximately 400,000 kilowatt hours annually •Projected to supply 50-60% of their annual electricity consumption •Projected payback 6-8 years; outlook varies depending on the actual rate of electricity inflation •(projected as 7.1% CAGR by AESO over the next 20 years) •Hail protection for 100-150 vehicles, annual hail insurance savings of $50,000 per year •Hail insurance deductible per occurrence reduced from $400,000 to $80,000 •Provincial government rebate through Energy Efficiency Alberta: ~$250,000

Rangeland Responsibilities: •Structural system engineering and design •Electrical System Detailed Engineering (Honda site) •On-site construction management
