Junior/Intermediate I&C Engineer

Position Summary:

The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer will provide technical expertise and engineering support for oil & gas and pipeline facility projects. This role includes designing, specifying, and implementing instrumentation and control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of process facilities. The engineer will work closely with process, mechanical, electrical, and civil teams to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions that meet client and regulatory requirements.

Key Competencies:


Engineering & Design:

  • Prepare instrument specifications, datasheets, indexes, and loop diagrams.

  • Develop and maintain P&IDs, cause-and-effect diagrams, control narratives, and alarm philosophies.

  • Select and size transmitters, analyzers, control valves, relief valves, and safety shutdown devices.

     

    Project Execution:

  • Provide instrumentation and controls input through all project phases (conceptual, FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning).

  • Support preparation of technical bid packages and vendor evaluations.

  • Review vendor drawings and ensure compliance with project standards.

     

    Operations & Commissioning Support:

  • Support construction and commissioning teams with technical guidance.

  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and controls issues during start-up and operations.

  • Ensure control strategies align with safety, operability, and reliability objectives.

    Collaboration & Compliance:

  • Work closely with project managers, discipline leads, and clients to align project scope and deliverables.

  • Ensure all instrumentation and control designs meet CSA, ISA, API, IEC, and client standards.

  • Provide input into hazard and operability (HAZOP), SIL, and LOPA studies.

    Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering Technology Diploma.

  • Experience:

    • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in oil & gas or pipeline facilities.

    • Experience sizing and specifying measurement and control devices and instrument data sheet generation.

    • Experience with vendor sizing software.

    • Experience developing and maintaining instrument indexes.

    • Experience with Cause & Effect Diagrams & Control Philosophies.

  • Skills:

    • Proficiency in SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) or equivalent.

    • Knowledge of industrial communications protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, OPC).

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Assets:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligibility for registration with APEGA.

  • Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET),  Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or eligible for registration.

  • Familiarity with oil & gas facility design (pipelines, terminals, compressor stations).

  • Field experience in commissioning or operations.
