As the Field Projects Team Leader for Provident Energy Ltd I have had the opportunity to work with Rangeland Engineering during the execution phase of our Capital Projects over the past 3 years. The size of the projects has ranged from 1MM to 48MM, and all involved complex piping and structural steel design and installation.
Rangeland uses CADWorx to develop a 3D model of the project, which in turn becomes the design tool used to go from owner buy-in and design approval, all the way to the construction work packages. Once complete, CADWorx 3D model is used to generate detailed structural steel drawings including 2D plan and elevation drawings using a rendering process. Isometric pipe drawings are also produced, which include pipe cut lengths, diameter inches of welding, and a complete B.O.M. The 2D rendering process also allows for plan and elevation views of all piping and equipment.By providing the field construction team access to NavisWorks, a CADWorx 3D model viewing software, a complete, real time walk through of the project can be done remotely. This feature allows construction personnel the ability to visually capture what the finished product is supposed to look like, and greatly increases the productivity of structural steel and pipe installation during construction.
Of course the accuracy of any 3D model is only as good as what you put into it, but it has been my experience that Rangeland produces a quality product, which in turn reduces our construction costs in the feild. Re-work in the field has decreased dramatically with the use of this software, in most cases less than 3%, which is well below industry average of 5 to 15%.
Overall, the use of CADWorx and the NavisWorks viewing software gives the owner a tool that can be used from the beginning of the project, right down to when the last bolt is installed, and increases the productivity during fabrication and installation and greatly reduces re-work. I would recommend Rangeland and the tools they use to anyone who has brown or green field construction projects.

Rangeland's 3D cad works software has helped us achieve construction efficiency on small to midsize projects. Typically, we would expect a 5-10% rework rate on our mechanical construction; with Rangeland's system in place, we were able to reduce that number to next to zero, which has resulted in significant savings to the overall project budget.
